Hiōgi Lamp

A walnut frame steamed into one sweeping curve, holding a fan-shaped shade of maple and pleated shoji paper.

This lamp takes its name from the hiōgi, a traditional Japanese fan made from thin slats of wood. The walnut frame began as straight boards, which I steamed and bent into a single sweeping curve, like a flower stem bowing under the weight of its bloom. Two arched legs cross at the base to hold it steady.

The shade opens like a fan, with thin maple panels attached to pleated shoji paper, so when it’s lit, light glows softly through every fold.
